
The Inishkea islands are places of outstanding cultural heritage and natural beauty. Inhabited until the mid-1930s they were home to resilient Irish-speaking communities now settled on the mainland. Inishkea South also held Ireland 's first whaling station, being situated right on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean . Both islands are now home to an amazing array of archaeology and wildlife. Michael Gibbons is an exceptional archaeologist and author of international standing. An experienced and wonderful guide, Michael recently completed a 5 year term as a member of the Archaeology Committee of the Heritage Council. His most recent book is ‘ Connemara : Visions of Iar Chonnacht' and his research interests include the archaeology of the intertidal zone and the pilgrimage tradition in Ireland .
